The Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) has denied social media rumors circulating which claimed that he gave his nephew a new car worth Ksh8 million due to his excellent performance in the recently released KCSE exam results. Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has branded this rumor as false.

These are the claims that were shared extensively on Facebook and X on Friday, January 9, and depicted a photo of Atwoli handing over the keys of the car to a young man who was standing alongside a Toyota Prado that was tied with a ribbon. These are the claims that were accompanied by the following texts:

“Francis Atwoli gifts his nephew a new Toyota Prado valued at Ksh8 million as a way of showing appreciation for his exemplary performance in his KCSE results,” was one of the posts.

The pictures and tales that went along with them received mixed responses. While Kenyans hailed Atwoli for the good deed they felt he had done, many asked for confirmation regarding the accuracy of the news.

“I don’t think it is right for these rich individuals to donate cars to their children/relatives. It would be better if instead, they rewarded the schools,” said a social media user.

In the wake of the rising discussions, Atwoli tried to set the records straight, refuting the information that he called fake and misleading information. He asked Kenyans to beware of what he termed social media propaganda.

This clarification came only hours after the Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, officially rolled out the KCSE results for 2025. Over 270,000 candidates scored the minimum qualification to join university institutions at C+ and above.

“A total of 1,932 candidates attained the top mark of A(plain), an improvement from a similar number of 1,693 attained in 2024,” Ogamba stated.

Soon after the release of the results, there were scenes of celebrations in homes and learning institutions as students and their families commended the improvement.
