The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has moved to clear the confusion many students are facing as they apply for courses this year.

Speaking during an online session on Saturday, KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome said students should not be scared by the cut-off points shown on the portal.

She explained that the cut-off marks will not be used to decide where students are placed this year. Instead, placement will depend on cluster points, course requirements and the number of available slots in each course and institution.

“Students need to just move on and proceed to register for courses they are eligible for,” said Wahome. The figures provided are only guidelines meant to assist in the registration process, he added.

This is happening amid questions raised by numerous students regarding the process of choosing their preferred courses and colleges due to insufficient knowledge.

KUCCPS explained that the cut-off points keep changing from one year to another depending on the performance of the applicants in their KCSE examinations. In the event of high performance by candidates, cut-off points rise due to competition; low performance by candidates results in low cut-off points.

According to guidance given to applicants, the use of the six slots while making applications makes it possible for one to increase his/her chances of getting registered. Students are however advised against repeating the same course at the same institution though can choose the same course at various institutions.

In the same breath, students who would not secure their preferred courses would be communicated via SMS during the second revision process.

As per information from KUCCPS, the second revision will be totally free except for a re-use of the KSh1, 500 payment codes students have previously used.

Students have also been advised to ensure that their phone contacts are updated to prevent any miss-outs on crucial information.

KUCCPS has also cautioned students against giving out their portal passwords even to cybercafé owners after some instances of account meddling by unauthorized persons.

Details regarding university transfer information, particularly those involving private to public university transitions, will be announced in due time.
