The government has issued a directive requiring all beachgoers in Kilifi County to vacate beach areas by 6.00 p.m. during the festive season as part of enhanced safety measures.
According to Kilifi County Commissioner David Wanyonyi, the directive intends to prevent insecurity as well as avoid drowning incidents. These have been the trend of the most common causes of deaths in the coastal towns during the holiday periods.
Wanyonyi pointed out that tidal waves along the shore become more vigorous and less predictable at night hence a great danger to swimmers and people who are having fun. He explained the restriction as a measure taken to save lives and lessen the occurrence of accidents which are avoidable.
Moreover, the county commissioner said security agencies will have more security vehicles on the beach to ensure people are following the order and to ensure that peace prevails during the festive period.
He called on the local people and the visitors to work hand in hand with the law enforcers and be in line with the directive saying, “we cannot afford to lose even one life during the holiday period as this has been our greatest challenge”. With Kilifi County being the most popular touristic destination, the government is still committed to ensuring the safety of the public.
