The Kikuyu Council of Elders has raised alarm over what it terms the increasing politicisation of the war on corruption, urging authorities to uphold due process and the rule of law in the handling of graft cases.

Speaking along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway after holding a prayer session for Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, the elders expressed their concerns following his dramatic arrest over alleged financial and procurement irregularities amounting to KSh 1.7 billion.

While reaffirming their support for the fight against corruption, the council cautioned against what they see as the weaponisation of anti-graft efforts for political expediency.“We stand firm in the fight against corruption. However, let it be guided by justice and the law, not by political vendettas,” said one of the elders during the roadside presser.

Governor Wamatangi was arrested earlier this week following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). A raid at his residence reportedly led to the recovery of KSh 12 million in cash. The EACC has accused him and several senior Kiambu County officials of involvement in procurement conflicts of interest and the misappropriation of KSh 230 million in the last financial year.

Wamatangi has since dismissed the allegations as a politically motivated witch-hunt meant to tarnish his leadership. The Council’s public show of support and their call for impartiality adds a fresh layer of complexity to the case, underscoring the intersection of politics, governance, and justice in the fight against corruption in Kenya.
