The Senate has invited public views of the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024, which proposes term extensions for leaders, the creation of a prime minister’s office, and an increase in funds allocated to counties.
The bill sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei seeks to extend the term of members of parliament, governors and the president from five to seven years.
Article 136 of the Constitution currently caps the presidential term limit to five years renewable only once.
The Senate’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing on the bill on October 25 at 9am at the Senate chambers.
Kenyans can email their submissions to clerk.senate@parliament.go.ke or hand deliver the memoranda to the clerk of the Senate before 5pm on October 25.
“The Bill seeks to amend Article 151 by inserting 151A which proposes to create the office of the Prime Minister who shall be appointed by the president from amongst the members of Parliament. The Prime Minister shall be the leader of the largest party or coalition of parties in Parliament,” the bill reads in part.
