Kenyan travellers can now buy mobile data for use abroad directly through their M-PESA balances following the launch of Kwetu eSIM on the Safaricom M-PESA Super App.
The new Kwetu eSIM Mini App allows users to purchase and activate digital SIM packages without having to look for a physical SIM card after arriving in another country.
The service covers more than 200 destinations worldwide, with users able to select country-specific, regional or global data packages depending on their travel needs.
The integration also allows Kenyans to pay in Kenya shillings using M-PESA, meaning travellers do not necessarily need an international debit or credit card to purchase a data package.
Kwetu eSIM General Manager Kevin Mwando said the service was designed to make it easier for travellers to stay connected when abroad.
“Travelers want instant, reliable data without the friction of physical SIM swaps or complicated payment methods,” Mwando said.
He added that users can set up their travel data package before leaving Kenya and connect when they arrive at their destination.
Travellers can also keep their primary Safaricom line active for calls and SMS while using the Kwetu eSIM for mobile data through partner networks abroad.
According to Kwetu, users can install the eSIM electronically after purchase, with the service supporting country and regional packages for people visiting multiple destinations.
The company’s website currently lists destinations including China, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, India and the United States.
To access the service, users open the M-PESA Super App, navigate to the Services or Book & Travel Apps section and select Kwetu eSIM.
Kwetu’s help centre also confirms that customers can make M-PESA payments for eSIM purchases and top-ups. Users are required to have an eSIM-compatible and network-unlocked phone before purchasing the service.
The development comes as more travellers turn to digital SIM technology to avoid the need to replace their physical SIM cards when travelling across borders.
