Kenyan media personality Janet Mbugua has criticized politicians for how they take over conversations meant to for important issues in the society, following the controversy surrounding nominated Senator Karen Nyamu’s appearance at media personality Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Janet praised Natalie’s courage, noting her willingness to share her story just weeks after surgery as both inspiring and necessary. She condemned the shift when Nyamu took the microphone and started addressing the attendees.
“Politicians, stop making awareness events about you. A senator took the mic and the story became the senator, similar to how MPs are turning funerals into campaign stages too,” Janet said.
She stated that Natalie’s journey has opened doors for conversations about endometriosis and the challenges many women face living with the condition.
“Natalie Githinji is the example of what politicians could never be. She used her own story as the door and walked the whole country through it to endometriosis, she said.
This comes after the nominated senator attended the event, took the stage and spoke about endometriosis and her work in Parliament.
Janet called for more awareness, stating the high cost of treatment can be expensive costing up to Ksh 1 million, while Kenya lacks clear data on how many women are living with the condition.
“Be enraged, then take that rage to the Senate. Where’s the endometriosis motion right now? Ask your senator,” Janet added.
