The Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti has suffered a blow following the death of one police officer.

The officer from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in SÉGUR – SAVIEN on Sunday, February 23, in the Artibonite department.

In a communication via X, the MSS said the officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries.

This is the first police officer to die in the Haiti mission aimed at ridding the Caribbean nation of armed gangs.

Despite the setback, since June 2024, Kenya’s police, in collaboration with officers from Jamaica, Bahamas, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize, have made substantial progress in combating the gangs.

This has led to the reopening of schools and colleges, as well as the reopening of courts.
