Kenyan troops serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are steadily reclaiming fragile ground in eastern Congo, with a fresh deployment signalling both security gains and renewed civilian confidence in conflict-hit North Kivu.

The Kenya 5th Quick Reaction Force pushed deeper into the volatile Eringeti–Mayimoya–Kainama corridor after stabilising previously insecure zones including Mbau, Oicha, Mantumbi and Mamove.

The advance, launched from the Mavivi base, marks a significant expansion of Kenya’s operational footprint within the UN mission.

Operating through newly established mobile bases, the troops mounted sustained day and night patrols along key routes, effectively disrupting armed group movements and reopening access to isolated villages.

But beyond the military push, it is the humanitarian response that is standing out.

Kenyan military medics moved with the troops, offering treatment to residents who have long gone without basic healthcare.

In areas like Eringeti and Kainama, where the nearest medical help is miles away in Oicha, the intervention brought immediate relief, particularly for malaria and respiratory infections that often turn deadly when untreated.

The combined approach, security operations alongside medical outreach, has helped rebuild trust between peacekeepers and local communities.

It reflects a broader shift toward people-centred peacekeeping under the UN mandate.

For Kenya, the operation underscores its growing influence in regional security and peace support missions.

It also highlights the Ministry of Defence’s expanding role not just in stabilisation, but in delivering impact where it matters most, on the ground, among civilians.
