Kenya secured a tournament double over arch-rivals Tembo Warriors of Tanzania, claiming a 2-0 victory in the finals of the Confederation of East and Central Africa Amputee Football Federation (CECAAF) Championships.

The final was held at Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.

James Ereng’ put Kenya ahead in the 26th minute, with striker Mohammed Munga doubling the lead in the 46th minute.

The early goals spurred the Kenyan side to put on a spirited defensive performance, maintaining a clean sheet until the final whistle to be crowned champions.

Hosts Burundi clinched the bronze medal after thrashing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 6-1 in the third-place playoff.

Justin Nduwimana starred with a hat trick, while Nikiza Amos scored a brace and Kwizerimana Trésor added another. Bellard Kitumaini scored the lone goal for DRC.

This victory marks Kenya’s first-ever gold medal in amputee football since the team’s formation in 2010—a historic milestone for the nation.

Head of Delegation Eng. John Tita expressed his commitment to supporting the team’s continued development, aiming to elevate players to professional standards.

CECAAF Secretary General Peter Oloo congratulated the team, promising to initiate discussions with various stakeholders upon the team’s return to Nairobi on Monday. The goal, he said, is to secure financial backing for establishing a national amputee football league in Kenya.

The triumphant Kenyan team is expected back in the country on Monday afternoon, with celebrations planned to honour their historic achievement. All stakeholders, including government officials, are expected to attend as Kenya revels in its maiden amputee football gold.
