The Ministry of Health is ramping up its response to the rising threat of diet-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by tightening Kenya’s food policy framework.
At the heart of this strategy is a Nutrient Profile Model that sets limits on sugar, salt, and saturated fats key contributors to NCDs.
To enforce the model, the Ministry is rolling out measures such as limiting junk food ads targeting children, introducing taxes on sugary drinks, regulating unhealthy food availability, and requiring warning labels on packaging.
In a bid to fast-track the plan, the Ministry held talks with Bloomberg Philanthropies to explore collaboration in finalizing the national food policy.
The efforts align with the government’s goal to promote healthy eating and prevent lifestyle-related illnesses across the country.
