Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano on Tuesday led a high-level reception at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for four critically endangered mountain bongos repatriated from the Czech Republic, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s wildlife conservation efforts.
The rare antelopes arrived aboard a cargo flight operated by KLM from European conservation facilities, where they had been part of a carefully managed breeding programme.
They were received alongside Czech Republic Ambassador Nicol Adamcova and officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service.
The repatriation forms part of a broader international conservation initiative aimed at restoring the mountain bongo population, one of the world’s most endangered antelope species, with fewer than 100 believed to remain in the wild.
Officials said the four males will be transferred to the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, where they will be integrated into a breeding programme to boost genetic diversity and support long-term rewilding efforts.
The latest transfer underscores growing international collaboration between Kenya and European conservation partners, as the country steps up efforts to reverse decades of decline caused by habitat loss, poaching and disease.
