Kenya’s Environment Cabinet Secretary, Deborah Mlongo Barasa, is calling on African countries to take charge of shaping carbon markets that genuinely serve the continent’s people and ecosystems.

Speaking during a high-level dialogue on African Carbon Markets in Nairobi, Barasa emphasised that Africa cannot afford to remain a spectator in global climate finance.

“The climate crisis is not just a global issue it’s personal for Africa. We must lead with homegrown, inclusive solutions,” she said.

Africa is on the margins of the world’s carbon markets as big as it is in terms of renewable energy potential and diversity.

Barasa insisted this has to change starting with fairer carbon prices, greater transparency, and payback to local people and investors.

She pointed out Kenya’s progress, including proposed carbon regulations, the Climate Change Amendment Act,and a national carbon registry to promote accountability and confidence in the process.

The event was attended by climate action influencers like AUDA-NEPAD CEO Nardos Bekele Thomas, UK High Commissioner Neil Wigan, and Kenya climate envoy Ambassador Ali Mohamed all reflecting the voice of an African-led path forward in the global carbon market.
