The government has set the record straight about the source of the KSh 150 million that was paid as a bonus to farmers supplying sugarcanes to the Mumias Sugar Company in Kakamega.
The sugar bonus, the first one in recent history, was presented by President William Ruto during his development tour of Western Kenya.
However, questions emerged about the source of the KSh 150 million, with some quarters alleging the funds were drawn from the exchequer as the company is still struggling financially.
Responding to the question, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the funds came directly from Mumias Sugar Company, not state coffers.
Mwaura added that the company is now thriving again and can pay farmers who supply it with canes a bonus.
"The KSh 150 million sugarcane bonus awarded to farmers came directly from Mumias Sugar company and not from State coffers. The company is thriving once again, with farmers having received their sugarbonus for the first time in recent history," said Mwaura.
