Kenya Power has surpassed its target for the 2023/2024 financial year by awarding tenders worth Sh4.15 billion to businesses owned by youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs). The achievement exceeded the company’s initial target of Sh3.2 billion, marking significant progress in its inclusivity agenda.
According to the company’s breakdown, youth-led enterprises took the largest share, securing Sh3.8 billion worth of tenders, while women-owned businesses were awarded Sh324 million. Businesses run by PWDs received Sh1.3 million.
In contrast, the previous financial year saw only Sh472 million worth of tenders reserved for these special interest groups.
John Ngenyo, Kenya Power’s General Manager for Supply Chain and Logistics, attributed this milestone to sustained efforts in engaging and educating marginalized groups about the procurement process.

“We sustained education forums for youth, women, and persons with disabilities on how to navigate our procurement system,” Ngenyo stated. “These efforts have contributed to a steady increase in Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) uptake over the years, and we are hopeful that more Kenyans will become aware of and benefit from these opportunities.”
The tenders awarded under the AGPO initiative primarily involved non-technical works, such as the supply of locally available materials, common user items, services, and cleaning contracts.
To further support these groups, Kenya Power is collaborating with financial institutions to provide financial assistance and plans to expand its outreach through workshops, pre-bid conferences, and better publicity of AGPO opportunities.
