Kenya has taken a major step forward in its shipbuilding journey with the launch of construction for the country’s first public ferry on Lake Victoria.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and her Blue Economy counterpart Hassan Joho led the keel laying ceremony at Kisumu Shipyard on Wednesday. The 29-metre shallow draught vessel, to be built by Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) in partnership with Karnafuly Ship Builders, will be operated by Kenya Ports Authority.
CS Tuya described the event as a milestone in Kenya’s ambition to become a regional shipbuilding hub, saying the new vessel will boost industrial growth and revolutionize water transport across riparian counties like Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori.
Hon Joho praised the project as a boost to the blue economy and a symbol of regional collaboration, noting Lake Victoria’s importance to over 40 million East Africans.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga welcomed the move as long overdue, highlighting the government’s commitment to developing the maritime sector, especially after hosting Madaraka Day under the theme of blue economy.
KSL Managing Director Maj Gen Mohammed Farah reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to supporting Kenya’s shipbuilding ambitions, while acknowledging government backing for the shipyard’s growth.
The ferry is expected to be completed by December 2025.
