Kenya will explore adopting elements of Finland’s universal healthcare model in efforts to strengthen its own health system, President William Ruto announced on Monday during a landmark State visit by Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Speaking at State House Nairobi, where President Stubb was officially received, President Ruto said the Nordic nation’s healthcare framework offers critical solutions to service delivery challenges facing Kenya.
He emphasized that Finland’s experience in building an efficient and inclusive healthcare system could help accelerate reforms under Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.“Kenya deeply values its longstanding friendship with Finland, a key development partner in Europe and a steadfast supporter of our national ambitions,” President Ruto said. “We are committed to leveraging Finland’s expertise in education, technology, renewable energy, and climate action to accelerate our country’s transformation.”
President Stubb, accompanied by his spouse Suzanne Stubb, was welcomed with full state honours, including a 21-gun salute and inspection of a guard of honour.
His visit marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Finnish head of state to visit Kenya, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
At the heart of bilateral talks between the two leaders was a commitment to deepen cooperation in healthcare, education, labour, tourism, trade, technology, environmental conservation, and forestry.
The two presidents also witnessed the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs): one on political consultations and another on peace mediation and conflict resolution.
The head of nation also addressed the recent controversy surrounding Kenyan students stranded in Finland, assuring the public that accountability measures would be taken against those responsible for the mishap.
Both leaders used the occasion to reflect on the shifting global political climate, underlining the need for stronger international cooperation in safeguarding democracy, defending human rights, supporting civil society, and promoting liberal values.
Reaffirming Kenya’s human rights stance, President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to ending enforced disappearances and abductions, saying, “This administration remains resolute in upholding the dignity and freedom of every Kenyan.”
President Stubb is in Kenya for a three-day State visit aimed at enhancing diplomatic and development ties between the two nations.
