Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli has announced a political war with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua vowing to burst his bubble.
This follows Gachagua’s constant criticism of President William Ruto’s government since his impeachment late in 2024.
Speaking on Tuesday, January 28, the COTU boss said he has resentment against Gachagua, whom he accused of undermining workers he represents during his reign in the Office of the Deputy President.
For instance, Atwoli claimed the former DP opposed President Ruto’s initiatives to address workers’ wellbeing, arguing they did not support his 2022 presidential bid.
As a result, Atwoli said he will rally Kenyan workers to oppose Gachagua’s political rhetoric.
"When we paid a courtesy call to the president at State House Nairobi in February 2023, Rigathi asked the president why was he meeting us yet workers did not support the president in the campaign. He said workers had no slightest share in this government. He dismissed workers. During Labor Day last year, I invited him to come and have lunch with workers. He refused. He is not pro-workers. We know him and we will fight him. I will make sure we fight him," Atwoli said.
