Kenya has secured a major diplomatic win in the global technology arena after being elected Vice Chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) confirmed the election took place during the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2025, which ended this week in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The TDAG plays a critical role in shaping the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT), advising on its operational, strategic and financial plans based on resolutions set by WTDC member states.
During the election, Fred Ong’aro, the CA’s Deputy Director for Fund Strategy Coordination, was chosen to represent Africa in the influential advisory body cementing Kenya’s growing reputation as a regional leader in digital policy and ICT development.
In a statement on Sunday, November 30, the authority said the victory positions Kenya at the centre of global digital policy-making.
“The election puts Kenya in a pole position to influence global digital policy development, enhances the country’s visibility in international forums, strengthens resource mobilization, and provides direct access to global best practices. This is the second time Kenya is holding the position of Vice Chair of TDAG,” CA noted.
The WTDC is one of the ITU’s top decision-making forums, gathering governments, regulators, tech industry leaders and development partners to set priorities for global ICT development.
CA says Kenya’s new role will deepen the country’s contribution to Africa’s digital transformation and strengthen international partnerships aimed at improving connectivity, innovation and sustainable tech growth.
“Through bilateral engagements and high-level discussions, the CS and PS affirmed Kenya’s readiness to collaborate with the ITU and member states in driving programmes that enhance connectivity, innovation, and sustainable technological growth across the region,” the authority added.
Another Global Win for Kenya on the Security Front
Kenya’s election to TDAG comes just days after another diplomatic milestone: Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohammed was elected to the Interpol Executive Committee during the General Assembly in Morocco on Thursday, November 27.
Amin will serve as Africa’s regional delegate alongside Tunisia’s Issam Fetoui, with both set to hold the position for three years.
