In a significant step towards improving employment opportunities for Kenyan healthcare workers, the Ministry of Health is intensifying efforts to equip nurses with the skills required for international employment, particularly in Germany.
On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai, welcomed representatives from the German Embassy for a strategic discussion aimed at expanding job opportunities for qualified but unemployed Kenyan nurses.
The meeting centered on the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kenya, Germany, and four of Kenya’s main referral hospitals.
The MoU will facilitate specialized training programs designed to enhance Kenyan nurses’ chances of securing employment in Germany’s healthcare sector.
Key to the initiative is ensuring that Kenyan nurses meet both the linguistic and technical standards required for the German workforce.
The program will place a significant focus on German language proficiency and professional competencies, which are essential for integration into the country’s healthcare system.
The Goethe Institute will play a central role in delivering the tailored language and professional training, ensuring that nurses gain the necessary qualifications to thrive in the German healthcare environment.
“This initiative is part of our broader commitment to expanding opportunities for skilled Kenyan workers while addressing the increasing global demand for healthcare professionals,” said Mr. Kimtai.
This collaboration between Kenya and Germany marks a promising advancement in bilateral relations, aiming to align training with international industry standards and provide Kenyan nurses with a viable pathway to secure employment abroad.
The project reflects both nations’ dedication to skills development, workforce mobility, and mutual economic growth.
