Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) female personnel serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have stepped up efforts to empower women-led businesses in Dhobley by creating market opportunities for locally produced goods.

The initiative, conducted under the Female Soldiers Empowerment Program, brought together members of the Dhobley Women Association Group, who showcased their products to mission personnel in an exhibition aimed at expanding their customer base and generating income.

The exhibition featured locally made items, including traditional deras, bedsheets, vikoi, sandals and other handmade products. The engagement gave the women an opportunity to market their goods directly to potential buyers while promoting local entrepreneurship.

Speaking during the event, Dhobley Main Operating Base Commander Colonel Paul Nalimo emphasised the importance of women’s economic empowerment in improving household livelihoods, strengthening social cohesion and addressing socio-economic challenges that can contribute to insecurity.

The initiative also provided an opportunity for KDF personnel to interact with members of the local community, strengthening mutual trust and civil-military relations.

KDF said the programme demonstrated the contribution of female peacekeepers beyond their security responsibilities, particularly in building community partnerships and supporting inclusive development.

“Sustainable peace is strengthened when communities have the opportunity to improve their livelihoods and build economic resilience,” KDF said.

Through the Female Soldiers Empowerment Program, the military said it was advancing a people-centred approach to peace support operations by recognising the role of economically empowered women in building resilient families and stable communities.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to connect community economic empowerment with sustainable peace and stability in Somalia.
