Wiper party leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed claims that the Azimio coalition is responsible for delays in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking on Sunday, Kalonzo emphasized that Azimio had fulfilled its obligation by nominating Dr. Koki Muli to the IEBC selection panel within the stipulated 48 hours.

He accused certain individuals of opposing Dr. Muli’s inclusion due to her perceived competence, advocating instead for “user-friendly” candidates.

“There are people who are afraid of her abilities and want to get user-friendly candidates,” Kalonzo stated, calling on President William Ruto to act swiftly to resolve the stalemate.

Kalonzo urged the state to address the court injunctions obstructing the IEBC panel’s formation, suggesting the cases are being influenced by individuals within the government.

“The fellows who have gone to court are known to the state. Tell them to withdraw the case, name the panel within a week, and ensure the IEBC is reconstituted in the next few months,” he added.

His remarks come amid mounting criticism, including from Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola, who recently accused the Opposition of stalling the process by failing to finalize their panel representation.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also weighed in on Sunday, urging political parties to resolve internal disagreements over panel nominations to expedite the IEBC’s reconstitution.

“It is not good for a country with a vibrant democracy like Kenya to stay for such a long time without a functional IEBC,” Kindiki noted. He further encouraged out-of-court settlements for cases hampering the process.

The IEBC reconstitution has become a pressing national concern, with stakeholders urging swift action to restore the commission’s functionality ahead of critical electoral timelines.
