Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stepped up his political mobilisation in Northern Kenya, saying the “Ukombozi wave” that has emerged in Garissa will spread across the region and beyond.
Kalonzo said he held talks with opinion shapers and respected elders from different clans in Garissa, as he continued to build political networks ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“This evening, I sat with opinion shapers and respected elders from across Garissa’s clans,” Kalonzo said in a statement.
He said elders remained an important source of wisdom and guidance in society, describing their voice as particularly significant at a time when Kenya is debating its political future.
“I hold our elders in the highest regard. They carry the wisdom that guides our families and holds our communities together, and their voice matters now more than ever,” he said.
Kalonzo said the discussions focused on the future of Garissa, Northern Kenya and the country at large, in what could signal efforts by the opposition leader to deepen his reach beyond his traditional political base.
“We spoke about Garissa, about Northern Kenya, and about the country we are building together,” he said.
The Wiper leader further declared that the political momentum he described as the “Ukombozi wave” would not remain confined to Garissa.
“The Ukombozi wave born here today will travel across Northern Kenya and beyond, into every corner of our nation. Together we shall Komboa Kenya,” Kalonzo said.
The visit comes as opposition leaders position themselves for the 2027 contest, with regional mobilisation expected to play a key role in determining alliances and voting patterns.
Kalonzo has increasingly presented himself as part of the opposition effort to challenge President William Ruto’s administration, while seeking to broaden his political appeal across different regions.
His engagement with Garissa elders also places emphasis on the role of community leaders in shaping political opinion in Northern Kenya, a region that has traditionally been an important battleground for national political alliances.
