Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the Kitui County Assembly to rename the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.
Speaking on Thursday at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he joined other leaders and family members in paying tribute to Raila’s legacy, Kalonzo said the gesture would be a fitting way to immortalize Odinga’s lifelong dedication to unity, democracy, and sports development in Kenya.
“Kitui County Assembly, I want you to move a motion expeditiously to name the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium Raila Amolo Odinga Stadium,” Kalonzo urged, noting that such recognition would keep Raila’s legacy alive for generations to come.
The Wiper leader described Raila as a passionate supporter of youth sports, particularly football, recalling their shared love for Arsenal FC.
“I was a better player than Raila in soccer, but he was a better commentator. And both of us were Arsenal,” Kalonzo joked, drawing laughter from the gathering.
Kalonzo also threw his weight behind an earlier proposal by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga to rename Nairobi’s upcoming Talanta Stadium project in Raila’s honour.
He said the idea resonates with the public mood to commemorate Raila’s immense contribution to Kenya’s political transformation and inclusivity agenda.
“I heard Governor Wanga during Raila’s burial talking about Talanta Stadium, and I want to support that strongly,” Kalonzo affirmed.
