James Orengo

Siaya governor James Orengo has hinted at a potential challenge to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking to over 800 farmers in Alego Usonga ward during a farm input distribution, he questioned why some believe a Luo cannot lead Kenya, pointing out that the community has produced global leaders, including Barack Obama.

Orengo stressed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) must field its own presidential candidate instead of supporting other political figures. He referenced other leaders who have already declared their bids, noting that ODM has the numbers and capacity to contest for the presidency directly.

“Our time is now. The big party called ODM must field a presidential candidate in 2027. That is a must,” he said.

The governor criticised sections of ODM engaging with the government on political arrangements, arguing that powerful positions are already reserved for leaders from other regions. He said ODM should focus on its own presidential ambitions rather than backing Ruto for a second term, underlining his readiness to compete directly for the nation’s top seat.

Orengo also addressed the 10-point agreement between ODM and UDA, insisting that its promises should be tangible to Kenyans. He highlighted urgent issues including extrajudicial killings, youth unemployment, and the cost of living, stressing that immediate action is required. At the same time, he announced plans to hold a major Linda Mwananchi rally in Siaya, aiming to involve citizens in shaping ODM’s direction.
