The renovation of the State House Nairobi building has drawn mixed reactions, with critics questioning President William Ruto’s government’s spending priorities.

In the repairs, which began in January 2024, the decades-old terracotta-tiled hipped roof has been replaced by a flat white roof, giving the building a fresh, stunning look.

The floor was also renovated and according to images seen by TUKIO.co.ke, the State House’s interior has been fitted with modern finishings.

Speaking to the Bunge la Mwananchi at the Jeevanjee Gardens in Nairobi, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said the renovations were necessary as the building was in a sorry state.

Mbadi said its roof was leaking, necessitating the restoration and modernisation of the facility. The CS said he is fulfilled with its current new look.

"When you look at it now, it looks good. It has been renovated. To me, State House had reached a point of shame, it was even leaking. Surely! the State House of the Republic of Kenya leaking? posed Mbadi.

He further dismissed critics who questioned the timing of the project saying,

"Now let me ask you people, you wanted the State House to remain the same forever? What you people should call for is we be rational... There will never be good timing. We will never have money..."
