Community-based organizations and human rights activists in Garbatula Ward, Isiolo County, have mobilized their resources to prevent a possible spike of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the area during the December school break.

Every Girl’s Dream, a local community organization, is leading the charge by holding awareness caravans, barazas, and radio programs, all of which are geared towards educating people about the practice, its health risks, and the legal consequences of FGM, which is a crime.

Aisha Hussein Roba, the founder of Every Girl’s Dream, said the campaign is mainly targeting the most vulnerable areas where FGM is still widely practiced. She explained that despite the challenges, community attitudes are gradually changing, and more people are now willing to join hands in the fight against FGM.

Local activists emphasize that continued sensitization and community engagement can be instrumental in ensuring the security of girls during the holidays when the incidence of FGM is usually ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌high.
