The United States and United Kingdom embassies in Nairobi have called for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

In separate statements, both diplomatic missions extended their condolences to Ojwang’s family and emphasized the need for accountability, reflecting growing domestic and international concern over the case.

“The Embassy of the United States of America extends our condolences to the family and loved ones of Albert Ojwang during this time of mourning,” read a statement from the U.S. Embassy. It expressed “concerns around the circumstances of Ojwang’s death” and underscored support for calls from the Kenyan government, parliamentarians, and civil society for a transparent investigation.

The embassy further urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to carry out its ongoing inquiry swiftly and thoroughly, calling on the Kenyan government to ensure the agency has the necessary resources and support to fulfill its mandate.

The British High Commission issued a similar message, stating on social media platform X:

“We echo calls for a swift, independent, and thorough investigation into his death in custody. The rule of law, accountability, and free speech are vital pillars of any democracy.”

Ojwang’s death, which occurred under unclear circumstances while in police custody, has ignited public outcry.

Human rights organizations, religious leaders, and lawmakers have all demanded full transparency and justice.

Several police officers reportedly linked to the case have already been interdicted, and IPOA has since launched a formal investigation.
