Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered the immediate transfer of all General Service Unit (GSU) officers and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) stationed in the Transmara area, Narok County, following a deadly confrontation that claimed six lives on Monday.
The clash occurred in the Angata Barrikoi area, where locals were resisting an attempt by government land officials to access and survey an 8,600-acre disputed piece of land. The situation quickly escalated into violence between the residents and security forces, leaving six people dead and several others injured.
IG Kanja visited the volatile region on Tuesday and assured the residents that those responsible for the killings will face justice. “It will not be business as usual. We will hold accountable any officer found culpable,” Kanja told the press during his visit.
The incident has sparked strong reactions from national leaders. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot pledged to follow up on investigations to ensure justice is served for the affected families.
Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of misrepresenting facts about the incident during a media briefing. In the National Assembly, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directed the Committee on Internal Security to provide a preliminary report on the incident by Wednesday. This directive came after Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli raised the matter in Parliament.
The deaths have once again cast a spotlight on longstanding land disputes in the region, with calls mounting for a thorough investigation and long-term resolution to avoid further bloodshed.
