The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) on Saturday hosted the Engineers Golf Day at Ruiru Sports Club, bringing together hundreds of engineers in a unique blend of sport, networking, and mentorship.
The charity tournament was aimed at raising funds to support engineering students across Kenya in joining the professional body.
According to IEK President, Eng. Shammah Kiteme, the initiative seeks to ensure that no student pursuing engineering misses the chance to become a member of the Institution.
“Every year, about 2,500 students enroll in engineering programs across 17 universities in Kenya. Our intention is to make sure all of them benefit from membership, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities,” said Eng. Kiteme. “This will prepare them for a smooth transition into graduate, corporate, and fellow membership categories.”
Supporting the Next GenerationMembership fees often pose a barrier for students, but with the funds raised from the golf day, IEK plans to cover those costs, giving young engineers free access to the body’s resources.
Tournament participant Eng. Okova Derek noted that the idea of the golf day was not only to network but also to nurture future engineers. “Initially, it was just meant to be a day for engineers to connect and strengthen our fraternity. But we realized we also needed to support students who cannot afford membership, so the funds we raise will go into a kitty that covers their costs,” he said.
Annual Event in the MakingThe tournament also attracted the support of several sponsors and is expected to become an annual event.
IEK says the goal is to sustain a long-term program that will give every student engineer in Kenya the opportunity to belong to the professional body. “This is more than golf. It’s an investment in the future of engineering in Kenya,” Eng. Kiteme emphasized.
