The newly appointed Chairperson and six commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) are set to be sworn in at midday today at the Supreme Court.

This comes after a three-judge bench on Thursday evening dismissed a petition that had challenged the nomination of Erustus Ethekon Edung as Chairperson, along with Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah as commissioners.

Although the court nullified a Gazette Notice issued on June 10, 2025, by President William Ruto appointing the seven officials, it directed that a fresh Gazette Notice be published to regularize the appointments.

The notice was issued promptly, clearing the way for the swearing-in ceremony.

Chief Justice Martha Koome is scheduled to preside over the ceremony.

The incoming team assumes office at a pivotal moment. Several by-elections are pending following the death or departure of elected representatives in various constituencies and wards.

Previously, the IEBC was unable to conduct these by-elections due to a lack of quorum following the departure of former commissioners.

The law requires that by-elections be held within 90 days of a seat falling vacant—something the Commission can now move forward with.

With exactly two years remaining until the 2027 General Election, the reconstitution of the IEBC marks a significant step toward stabilizing Kenya’s electoral infrastructure.
