Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Hussein Marjan has resigned from the electoral body.

In a statement seen by TUKIO.co.ke, the outgoing CEO did not specify the exact cause of his departure from the commission.

IEBC chair Erastus Edung Ethekon, in another statement, confirmed Hussein’s exit and said he would announce his interim replacement in an acting capacity pending the recruitment of a new CEO and Secretary to the Commission.

Ethekon was grateful for Hussein’s tenure at the commission and wished him well in his future endeavours.

"The commission takes this opportunity to appreciate the work of Marjan, who was a committed servant and offered his professional services and leadership to IEBC since March 2022, when he was appointed as CEO/CS. We particularly thank him for steering the Commission Secretariat during the period of absence of the commissioners until when the current commission was fully constituted on July 11, 2025. The commission wishes the former CEO/CS well in his future endeavours," said Ethekon.

Hussein joined the commission in March 2015 as Deputy CEO for Support Services. He later became the acting CEO in September 2017 after the exit of then-CEO Ezra Chiloba.

He was appointed substantive CEO on March 8, 2022, after extensive interviews.

It is worth noting that the commission is currently under pressure to deliver next year’s elections, with the opposition leaders raising issues they need addressed before the polls.
