Health workers unions in the Country have raised the alarm over what they term as the rise of insurance cartels in Kenya’s health sector, accusing major insurance companies of interfering with patient care and frustrating the delivery of quality healthcare.

Led by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), the unions warned that the practices are undermining the government’s push for universal health coverage.

According to KMPDU Secretary General, Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, the insurance companies have been dictating hospitals which patients should visit, which doctors to consult, and even which tests and drugs they should receive.

The union claims delayed claim settlements have forced some hospitals and doctors to demand cash payments from patients, while others are compelled to rely on the Social Health Authority funds before insurance steps in, draining resources meant for the vulnerable.
