The government has raised concerns over the increasing number of Kenyans who fall into alcoholism and drug abuse after securing jobs abroad. Speaking during the launch of the renewed Kazi Majuu initiative in Nairobi, Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua emphasized that a thorough vetting process will be conducted to ensure only skilled and disciplined individuals benefit from the program.

Thousands of job seekers gathered at Jesus Winner Ministry Church in Roysambu for the overseas job recruitment exercise, eager for an opportunity to work abroad. Dr. Mutua, while presiding over the event, reiterated the government’s commitment to cracking down on rogue recruitment agents who deceive job seekers with false promises, only for them to face hardships in foreign countries.

"The government is closely working with overseas employers to guarantee Kenyan workers receive proper compensation and work in a conducive environment," Mutua stated.

He further cautioned those seeking employment abroad against engaging in substance abuse, which has led to numerous cases of stranded and troubled workers.

The Kazi Majuu initiative, which aims to provide employment opportunities to 1,000 Kenyans across various fields, has been well received by job seekers. The targeted sectors include healthcare, transportation, construction, hospitality, and plumbing, with destinations such as Germany, the UAE, Qatar, and Australia.

As the government tightens its oversight on foreign employment, the initiative is expected to provide a safer and more structured pathway for Kenyans seeking opportunities abroad while ensuring their welfare is safeguarded.
