After​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ multi-agency engagement in tracking, apprehending and dismantling groups that deal in illegal fuel, the government has given an ultimatum to traders in Garissa County who are selling petrol through illegal channels.

Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo, together with the security agencies, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) officials, led a surprise operation in Burburis area. Several makeshift fueling points were seized by the team who accused them of selling products illegally acquired from petroleum.

In the raid, police did not arrest anyone, but they confiscated a large number of empty 20-liter jerricans that were believed to have been used in the distribution of illegal fuel.

The underground fuel trade in Garissa has been going on for as long as three to six months, the authorities say, which has been a major blow to the licensed fuel stations and at the same time has been exposing consumers to severe safety and environmental risks without their knowledge.

Commissioner Mwabudzo promised that the law enforcement officers will be showing no mercy to those who illegally sell fuel. He further stated that the government will not allow illegal businesses that jeopardize public safety and revenue collection.
