The government has unveiled plans to upgrade State House Road in Nairobi at an estimated cost of Sh1.6 billion, as part of a broader national programme aimed at improving key transport corridors across the country.

According to tender documents issued on December 19, the project will be implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and falls under a traffic circulation and capacity enhancement scheme.

The road, which links Nairobi’s central business district to State House and other high-level government offices, is considered one of the city’s most strategic routes.

Officials say the upgrade will ease congestion, enhance safety, and improve traffic flow, particularly during official functions and public demonstrations that often disrupt movement in the area.

The State House Road upgrade is part of a wider package of 92 road projects planned nationwide, with a combined budget of Sh15.6 billion.

Under the programme, Chelimo Road in Kericho Town will be upgraded at a cost of Sh1.1 billion, while Kilifi County’s Gede–Kakuyuni road will be improved to bitumen standards at Sh967.5 million.

In Eldoret, link roads have been allocated Sh950 million, while Nakuru County will see the dualling of Oginga Odinga Avenue, from the Subukia underpass to the Westmall roundabout, at an estimated cost of Sh850 million.

The projects form part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s long-term infrastructure agenda, which aims to modernise the national road network and stimulate economic growth.

President William Ruto has previously outlined a 10-year plan to dual 2,500 kilometres of highways and construct 28,000 kilometres of tarmacked roads across the country. In his State of the Nation address in November, the President said improved transport infrastructure would play a key role in boosting trade, enhancing security, and lowering the cost of doing business.

Contractors interested in the KURA tenders are required to meet strict eligibility criteria, including submission of a Certificate of Incorporation, valid annual practising licence, Tax Compliance Certificate, and a CR12 form.

Firms applying under the Special Projects category must also present a valid AGPO registration certificate.
