The government has reviewed the progress of the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme as it seeks to accelerate efforts to restore and transform the Nairobi Rivers Basin.
Dr Patrick Mariru held a meeting with Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles M. Hinga at Prism Towers to assess the implementation of the programme.
The meeting brought together teams from the Ministry of Defence and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, who received an update on the progress of the programme.
Mariru said the initiative covers a range of interventions aimed at protecting, restoring and rehabilitating the Nairobi Rivers Basin while improving the appearance of the surrounding environment.
“The meeting brought together teams from the Ministry of Defence and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development. We received an update on the implementation of the Programme, which encompasses the protection, restoration, rehabilitation and beautification of the Nairobi Rivers Basin,” Mariru said.
The programme also incorporates the development of affordable housing and markets as part of broader efforts to improve living conditions and economic opportunities for communities living and working within the basin.
Officials used the meeting to deliberate on the way forward, with a focus on speeding up the implementation of planned interventions and improving coordination among participating government agencies.

Mariru said the government was keen to ensure that projects under the programme are implemented to completion.
“We deliberated on the way forward, with emphasis on expediting implementation, strengthening coordination among the participating agencies and ensuring that the planned interventions are delivered to completion,” he said.
The Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme is a national initiative aimed at transforming the Nairobi Rivers Basin into a clean, sustainable, safe and liveable environment.
The programme is also expected to improve the quality of life for communities living and working within the basin by combining environmental restoration with urban development interventions.

The involvement of the Ministry of Defence and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development is expected to strengthen coordination in the implementation of the various projects under the programme.
Mariru said the broader objective was to ensure that the Nairobi Rivers Basin becomes a more sustainable urban environment while supporting communities that depend on the area for their livelihoods and daily activities.
“The Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme is a key national initiative aimed at transforming the Nairobi Rivers Basin into a clean, sustainable, safe and liveable environment, while improving the quality of life for communities living and working within the basin,” Mariru said.
