The Government has launched investigations into the frequent fires that continue to plague markets within Nairobi City County, including the most recent incident at Gikomba Market that occurred on April 1, 2025.

The fire caused significant losses to hundreds of small-scale traders, destroying property and disrupting livelihoods. In response, the government has instructed relevant security and investigative agencies to determine the root cause of the recurring market fires and develop a comprehensive long-term solution aimed at preventing future tragedies.

As part of its long-term strategy, the government is constructing 400 modern markets across the country. Of these, 10 will be located within Nairobi City County, targeting vulnerable areas such as Gikomba, Toi, and Muthurwa Markets.

The new markets will be equipped with critical amenities including fire-fighting equipment, cold rooms for perishable goods, and lactation rooms to support breastfeeding mothers.

Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki, who visited Gikomba Market following the fire, met with nearly 400 affected traders to offer government support and reassurance.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing trading environments to ensure safety, dignity, and order for traders.“The continued loss of lives and livelihoods through market fires is unacceptable. We are committed to getting to the bottom of these incidents and providing a permanent solution,” said Kindiki.

He was accompanied by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Commissioner Charles Njagua of the Commission on Administrative Justice, and representatives from Gikomba Market leadership. The frequent fires, especially in informal markets like Gikomba and Toi, have raised concern among traders and urban planners, prompting urgent calls for infrastructure upgrades and better safety mechanisms.

The government now says it is prioritizing these efforts to protect informal traders and ensure a secure and structured environment for commerce in urban centers.
