Government plans to provide subsidised animal genetics to help farmers improve their local livestock breeds across the country.
Livestock Development Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke said the projects will be implemented under the Kenya Livestock Commercialisation Project (KelCOP).
Speaking in Siaya where he commissioned the projects, Mueke said that the national government will also collaborate with devolved units to roll out national vaccination campaigns to control diseases and enhance trade in livestock products.
He called on Siaya residents to take advantage of the government initiatives to improve their breeds and compete with other regions in selling their livestock beyond the country.
“We have had a discussion with the county government and we have agreed that we will continue with our collaboration to ensure that we increase our production of livestock and livestock products,” he said.
The speaker of the Siaya county assembly, George Okode who represented Governor James Orengo said the county benefitted to the tune of Ksh 46 million from KeLCOP.
Okode called for extension of the project that currently covers only four wards to all the 30 wards.
He further called for construction of modern livestock markets in Aram, Boro, Akala and Bar Ober markets.
Mueke Mueke commissioned Arongo water pan in West Uyoma ward, Bondo slaughter house and bore hole in North Sakwa ward and Ng’iya livestock market in South East Alego ward.
