The government, through the State Department for Special Programmes, has dispatched tonnes of food and non-food relief items to residents of Chesongoch in Kerio Valley, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, following the devastating landslide that struck the area.
According to official reports, 21 people have been confirmed dead, 30 remain missing, and 25 others with serious injuries have been airlifted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret for specialized treatment. Several others with minor injuries were treated locally.
The relief consignment includes 600 bags of rice, 520 bags of beans, 1,000 blankets, 300 mattresses, 30 boxes of soap, and 10 bales of sanitary towels, among other essential supplies.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen commended the swift response and collaboration among government agencies and humanitarian partners involved in the rescue and relief efforts.
“We are grateful for the dedicated support of the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Government Administrative Officers, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet, the National Disaster Operations Centre, the Kenya Red Cross, and other non-state actors who have worked tirelessly to save lives,” said Murkomen.
The CS was accompanied by Governors Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu), Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku, Principal Secretaries Chris Kiptoo (National Treasury) and Ismail Maalim (Special Programmes), as well as Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura and other senior government officials.
