The construction of the Githunguri Modern Market in Kiambu County is now more than 50 percent complete, Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said.
Omollo said the multi-level facility, co-funded by the National Government through the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) and the Kiambu County Government, will provide a modern and dignified trading environment for more than 1,500 traders.
The market will feature 768 trading stalls, 178 basement parking spaces and an additional 655 parking and drop-off slots. Other facilities include an ICT centre, food court, community hall, dispensary and crèche.
According to Omollo, the facility will support Githunguri’s agricultural economy through dry stores, cold rooms, reliable water supply, drainage, solar floodlighting and digital payment systems.
The project is also expected to create employment and provide skills development opportunities, particularly for young people and women in the area.
Omollo said the market will replace the congestion and exposure associated with traditional open-air markets with a clean, secure and weatherproof trading space.
The facility will also connect with the nearby Waruhiu County Aggregation and Industrial Park, supporting a farm-to-market value chain.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating security planning and implementation with national and county authorities.
