Government Boosts Disease Surveillance and Community Health Efforts

Kenya is stepping up its preparation for disease outbreaks through enhanced vigilance in disease monitoring and control, as well as the provision of health services right in the community.

In an interview with TV47 aired Monday evening, Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni stated that the government is strengthening how health threats are detected and contained before they spread.

In her address, Muthoni stated that disease monitoring has been enhanced in the country, and health services are being pushed to the community level to ensure diseases are detected early and contained in time.

A key aspect of this is the increasing role of Community Health Promoters (CHPs). These are community workers who spread health education to families and communities on how to live healthily and provide basic health education and assistance in detecting early signs of disease.

Another area Muthoni highlighted is the advancement of the Social Health Authority, where health financing reforms are yielding fruits as more citizens are accessing health services as the country approaches Universal Health Coverage.

She also said that the government is making efforts to ensure that Kenyans are able to prevent diseases in their households by launching programs such as Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani and Jamii Imara Mashinani.

According to Muthoni, the government is making efforts to ensure that Kenyans are able to prevent diseases in their households, stating that this is one way in which the country can be protected from diseases in the future.
