Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has proposed a Sh16.69 billion allocation to the Department for Sports in the 2025/26 financial year, as part of a broader Sh29.7 billion package aimed at boosting tourism, sports, culture, recreation, and the arts.
Presenting the budget to the National Assembly on Thursday, Mbadi said Sh13.5 billion will go to the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund, while Sh2.3 billion is earmarked for automating and digitizing the Office of the Sports Registrar.
Other allocations include: Sh241 million to the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (Adak), Sh402 million to Sports Kenya and Sh245 million to the Kenya Academy of Sports.
The Sports Fund allocation represents a Sh3 billion drop from last year’s Sh16.5 billion proposal by then-CS Njuguna Ndung’u.
Additionally, Mbadi’s overall sports budget proposal is Sh773.8 million less than what the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) recommended earlier this month.
The BAC, led by Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, had suggested a Sh17.46 billion allocation—already reduced from the Treasury’s initial Sh18.59 billion.
The increased funding for Adak is particularly notable. The agency received only Sh20 million in the current financial year, prompting backlash from sports stakeholders and calls for better support.
