The government has allocated KSh10.3 billion for the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project in the Mt. Kenya region—a major milestone in President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and a crucial step toward achieving Vision 2030’s goal of universal access to electricity.
Speaking during a visit to Kilimambogo in Thika East, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira reaffirmed the government’s dedication to expanding electricity access across the country.
This allocation is part of the larger KSh42 billion Last Mile Electricity Program, designed to bring affordable power to underserved and remote communities.
As part of the initiative, Kiambu County has received KSh490 million, enabling the connection of hundreds of households and small businesses to the national grid.
The project is expected to spur economic growth, enhance security, and drive development in regions like Thika East.
During the official launch in Matathia Village, Dr. Rose Mkalama, CEO of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), urged residents to safeguard the newly installed transformers, citing frequent cases of vandalism.
She also warned the community to beware of fraudsters demanding payment for connections, stressing that the government is providing the service free of charge.
Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a praised the program, highlighting that over 1,750 families in her constituency stand to benefit. She described it as a vital boost for local youth and small-scale traders, offering the infrastructure needed to expand their businesses and create employment.
Residents welcomed the project with optimism, expressing hope that the new electricity connections would improve their quality of life and unlock new economic opportunities.
The Last Mile Connectivity Project remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s long-term development agenda and reflects the government’s firm commitment to empowering communities through strategic infrastructure and inclusive service delivery.
