The Senate nomination position held by embattled Senator Gloria Orwoba has officially been declared vacant.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi made the announcement officially in a gazette notice, citing Article 101(2) of the Constitution.

Orwoba’s removal from the Senate was precipitated by her expulsion from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) that sponsored her nomination to the Senate.

She was expelled from the President William Ruto-led outfit following allegations of disloyalty, gross misconduct, and violation of party ideals.

The party’s Disciplinary Committee, after thorough deliberation, found that Orwoba’s actions, most notably her public association with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, constituted a breach of party discipline and loyalty.

UDA leadership argued that Orwoba could not “play for two political teams simultaneously,” referencing her involvement in Matiang’i’s political activities and her perceived alignment with opposition interests.

After the party’s National Executive Committee ratified her expulsion, UDA formally notified the Speaker of the Senate, the Registrar of Political Parties, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), triggering the constitutional process for her removal from Parliament.

The party also nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi as her replacement, in accordance with the party list submitted before the 2022 General Election.
