Head coach Gerardo Martino has stepped down from his position at MLS club Inter Miami “due to personal reasons,”.
The 62-year-old Argentine coach, who took charge of the club in June 2023, leaves with a year remaining on his contract.
Under Martino’s leadership, Inter Miami achieved historic success, securing their first two trophies: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
“It has been an honour to work at such a special club and lead such a remarkable team,” Martino said in a statement. “I’ve cherished my time at Inter Miami and will always treasure the memories and relationships I’ve built here.”
He added, “I leave with deep gratitude for my time here and thank everyone who made this journey possible.”
Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, announced that the club would reveal Martino’s successor soon, with former Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano being widely speculated as the new head coach.
Mascherano, a former Barcelona and Liverpool player, shares a strong connection with Inter Miami’s star players, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, having been teammates with them both.

Martino took over in July 2023 after Inter Miami had sunk to the bottom of the MLS standings, with just 5 wins from 18 games. His arrival marked an immediate turnaround, culminating in the Leagues Cup victory. The team also set a record for the most points in a single MLS season while clinching the Supporters’ Shield in 2024.
However, Inter Miami’s playoff hopes were dashed when they were knocked out in the first round by Atlanta United.
In a controversial development, Inter Miami also qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup after winning this season’s MLS Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record.
