Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has formally declared his intention to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
In a recent interview with Meru-based Weru TV, Gachagua emphasised his determination to ensure President Ruto becomes a “one-term president,” vowing to deploy a data-driven campaign strategy while uniting rival political figures under a single alliance.
"I’m running for president…If they don’t pick me, it’s okay, I’ll support someone else, but President Ruto has to go home. He must! We’ll use whatever formula works," he declared.
Gachagua has assembled a coalition of high-profile leaders, including former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and ex-Public Service CS Justin Muturi, branding the group as a united front to “liberate Kenya” from Ruto’s administration.
He promises to abolish Ruto’s Housing Levy, refund collected funds, and transfer housing initiatives to county governments.
Despite his recent impeachment, Gachagua insists he remains eligible to run, citing unresolved legal challenges that he intends to pursue up to the Supreme Court.
While confirming his personal presidential bid, Gachagua acknowledged the coalition would eventually settle on a single candidate through consensus, pledging support even if he is not selected.
