Security has been heightened in parts of Garissa County after a deadly attack that took the life of a chief and a primary school teacher in the Hulugho area of Garissa County last night.
This comes after the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed on Monday that they had responded to the security threat, with many people concerned about the security of the area, thereby leading to heightened security operations in the region.
According to the police, the security agencies have been sent to the region in search of the perpetrators of the deadly attack that has been contained in the Hulugho region of Garissa County, as the operations are underway to hunt down the attackers.
“The National Police Service is aware of and is actively responding to a security incident that occurred earlier today, Monday, 26th January 2026, in the Hulugho area of Garissa County, in which a chief and a teacher were killed,” the police stated in their communication on the issue.
The police also stated that police patrols within the Hulugho area and other regions were immediately intensified to ensure that there were no further occurrences and to reassure the residents within that area.
The NPS acknowledged that there was fear as a result of the attack, especially among the residents who woke up to hear about the attack, and urged them to remain calm while working with the security agencies within that region.
“We wish to reassure the public, especially residents of Hulugho, that their safety and security remain our utmost priority. We urge anyone with information regarding the attack to share it with the authorities.”
The victims of the attack were identified as the area chief, Abdifatah Gani, and a teacher at Hulugho Primary School, Stephen Musili. The police suspect that the attack could have been carried out by suspected Al Shabaab militants, although investigations are still underway.
According to sources within that region, the two were attacked in different locations during the night, and there are serious security concerns within that region.
The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting the citizens and ensuring that those who carried out the attack are brought to justice.
