Former Deputy President has strongly condemned the death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher and social media commentator, who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi.
In a hard-hitting statement, the former DP described Ojwang’s death as a “brutal murder” and a tragic reflection of a government that is allegedly targeting outspoken Gen Z voices.
“Albert Ojwang’s brutal murder in the hands of police officers has revived the painful wounds of the tens of Gen Zs who continue to be killed by security agencies of the Ruto Administration,” he said.
The former DP accused Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat of being the complainant in the case that led to Ojwang’s arrest and demanded his immediate suspension to allow for independent investigations.
“Mr. Eliud Lagat must take full responsibility for this murder. Suspending junior officers at Central Police Station is hoodwinking Kenyans,” he added.
He further linked Lagat to a previous incident in which police allegedly withdrew from a church service in Mwiki, leaving the former DP and congregants vulnerable to attacks by goons.
“DIG Lagat is personally operating Kamukunji and Central Police stations without the knowledge of the IG,” he claimed, alleging that these two stations had turned into “new torture chambers.”
The former DP said Ojwang’s transfer from Homa Bay to Central Police Station was suspicious, suggesting it was part of a wider effort to silence dissenting youth voices.
“There has been no worse mutilation of our freedoms in Kenya than under this regime. This government is not broad-based — it is blood-based,” he said, adding that the current administration was surviving on the blood of Gen Zs.
He concluded with a direct appeal to President William Ruto:
“Mr. President, leave our children alone. You swore by the Holy Bible to protect the lives and property of Kenyans. Kenya is not a mafia state.”
