Frankline Kibet announced himself on the global stage in emphatic fashion, striking gold on his World Championships debut by winning the U20 men’s race at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Tallahassee 26 on Saturday.
The teenager had shown consistent promise coming into the event, finishing second at the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships in February last year.
He also placed runner-up in the 5000m at Kenya’s trials for the African U20 Championships and again ended second at the end of 2025 in the trial race for the World Cross.
With attention largely focused on his teammates — Kenyan Trials winner Emmanuel Kiprono and world U20 5000m champion Andrew Alamisi — Kibet delivered a perfectly judged performance.
He unleashed a decisive kick to claim victory in 23:18, leading a dominant Kenyan 1-2-3-4 finish and sealing team gold.
Kiprono held on for silver in 23:20, while Alamisi secured bronze in 23:28.
The result marked the sixth time in World Cross Country Championships history — after 1993, 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2010 — that Kenya has swept the U20 men’s medals, a feat unmatched by any other nation.
